May 2007
A Personal Note From Steve Gorman, President of Alternative Health Insurance Services, Inc.

We are pleased to present the May edition of our newsletter.   It is being e-mailed a little later than usual due to the special edition we sent at the end of April regarding the FDA proposed regulation of alternative medicine.

I hope you continue to find the information in our newsletters to be of value and always welcome any thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc.  You may view prior newsletters by clicking on the link listed near the bottom of this newsletter.

Each issue will continue to feature information about The Elaine Anestos Gorman Foundation in the hope that our readers will help spread the word and educate more people about the existence of Inflammatory Breast Cancer.  If the Foundation can help save some lives, that would honor the memory of my wife and make her proud.

This issue also contains news about an exciting new benefit available to our clients that covers acupuncture and chiropractic maintenance as well as herbal remedies.

To our existing clients, thank you again for your continued support.  To those receiving our newsletter for the first time, I hope you enjoy it and thank you for the opportunity to be of service.

Sincerely,

Steve Gorman

The Elaine Anestos Gorman Foundation

We have established The Elaine Anestos Gorman Foundation for the purpose of raising consciousness about inflammatory breast cancer (IBC).

IBC is an advanced and accelerated form of breast cancer usually not detected by mammograms or ultrasounds .  Some women who have inflammatory breast cancer may remain undiagnosed for long periods, even while seeing their doctor to learn the cause of their symptoms. The symptoms are similar to mastitis, a breast infection and some doctors, not recognizing IBC, will prescribe antibiotics. If a response to antibiotics is not apparent after a week, a biopsy should be performed or a referral to a breast specialist is warranted.

For more information, visit www.RememberElaine.org.  The website is constantly being updated with new information and links.

The Foundation is a tax exempt organization under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Contributions to the Foundation are deductible under section 170 of the code.

If you wish to make a contribution, please send checks payable to:
The Elaine Anestos Gorman Foundation
3265 Falerno Way
San Jose, CA 95135

I hope you will share this website with many people and help us make more people aware of this deadly and little known disease, which is on the rise.
Sincerely,
Steve Gorman

Study: Fish oil may preserve thinking ability in elderly
According to a Reuters Health article citing two studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, High blood levels of omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, may help preserve thinking ability in the elderly. In one study, researchers evaluated data for 210 healthy men in the "Zutphen Study," who were 79 to 89 years old in 1990 and had normal mental capacity. Their diets were assessed in 1990, and cognitive function was tested in 1990 and again in 1995, observing that those who ate fish had a slower decline in cognitive function than subjects who did not eat fish. In the other study, researchers showed that high blood levels of EPA and DHA are associated with less decline in verbal ability.

Study: Some chemo, other treatments may cause cancer spread
Chemotherapy and other treatments intended to treat cancer tumors may actually cause them to spread, a new study contends, although why that happens is unknown. The chemo drug doxorubicin or radiation on tumors raised TGF-beta levels that helped a breast cancer spread to the lungs, according to tests in mice. Researchers said an antibody used to block TGF-beta halted the process. Reuters
